Sonaimuri is a prosperous town. The region is rich in history, heritage, education, economic, social, political and religious conditions. Although nothing is known about the history of this region, it is a town with a tradition of thousands of years. Bangladesh was born in 1971 after defeating the Pak aggressors through the war of independence. Sonaimuri emerged as a union in Begumganj upazila of Noakhali district. The thana was established on January 26, 2001 and on January 29, 2005 it was decided to make it a new administrative upazila. On April 4, 2005, Sonaimuri emerged as an independent administrative upazila through a gazette notification of the government of Bangladesh with 10 unions of the former Begumganj upazila.
There are some different ideas about the naming of Sonaimuri upazila. One of the common notions is that at one time a market called Kalir Hat was established around the Sonaimuri Kalibari temple. It was famous for coconut, betel nut and jute at that time. The owners of the country's top jute mills used to buy jute from the market. Jute is called golden ash. The jute in this market was really like gold and the soil of this area, the minds of the people were rich in gold. Many people think that this is why the name of this area is Sonaimuri.
