Sonaimuri Upazila is an upazila in Noakhali district in Bangladesh. Begumganj upazila was broken up and Sonaimuri upazila was formed.

 

Location

Area: 160.42 sq km. Location: 23 ° 026 to 23 ° 06 north latitude and 91 ´ 008 to 91 ° 137 east longitude.

 

Administrative area

Manoharganj upazila of Comilla district on the north, Begumganj upazila on the south, Senbagh upazila on the east and Chatkhil upazila on the west. This upazila consists of 10 unions and 1 municipality. The unions are Ambernagar, Amishapara, Chashirhat, Jayag, Deuti, Nateshwar, Nadna, Bajra, Bargaon, Sonapur. The only municipality is Sonaimuri municipality.

=== Events of the Liberation War ===

In 1971, this upazila was under Sector 2. The Pak army entered Sonaimuri on Thursday 22 April 1971 at 11:00 am. On 11 May 1971, about 20 Pak soldiers were killed in a battle with the Pak army at Bogdad (Bagadia) in Sonaimuri. Besides, 2 freedom fighters were martyred in this battle. The upazila was liberated on 7 December.
